Because of its strategic position on the major caravan route between Southern Europe and North Africa all the great early civilizations passed through Jordan. The Egyptians, The Assyrians, Babylonians, Hittites, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Turks and Crusaders all traded, built cities and fought their wars here, leaving behind rich cultural influences.
With no oil and little water, Jordanians have intelligently preserved and marketed their historical and natural treasures. Eco-tourism is well-developed here and the local population has a good level of environmental awareness. Jordanians are friendly and hospitable towards foreigners and most of the middle and upper class speak English.
